Hedland’s new marina reference group will hold its first meeting on February 2 and begin studying reports into the town’s proposed $152 million marina development.

The group are set to play a guiding role as debate about whether the marina should be located at the Spoilbank or Cooke Point looms. It is potentially one of the most important decisions in Hedland’s history.

Many residents believe an attractive waterfront development would be a key to improving Hedland’s quality of life and encouraging more people to live in the town.

Town of Port Hedland chief executive Mal Osborne said the reference group would analyse reports into the marina development and make recommendations to local councillors and government staff.

“Their role will be to guide the Town during the decision-making process,” he said.

“First on the agenda will be an overview of the group, its role, terms of reference and code of conduct.”

“We will also provide an overview (to the reference group) of work undertaken to date and snapshot of where decisions and investigative work is up to.”

The reference group is composed of nine community members, five councillors and representatives from Port Hedland business and community groups as well as the mining industry.
